Karaté: Roger St-Arneault et ses élèves décrochent quatre médailles au tournoi de Delhi
(DC.) Les représentants de l'école de Roger St-Arneault de Rouyn-Noranda ont décroché quatre médailles individuelles le week-end dernier lors du tournoi de karaté de Delhi, une petite ville situé dans la région de London.
Chez les ceintures noires, Roger
St-Arneault a lui-même signé deux podium avec une 1re place en
kata (chorégraphie) et une 3e position en combat. En compagnie
de Suzanne Paquin, St-Arneault a aussi aidé une sélection du
tournoi à surprendre l'équipe canadienne de l'Association
Wado-Kai lors d'une rencontre par équipe. Ils ont tous deux
gagné leurs combats. Che les ceintures blanches, Martine Collin
a triomphé dans les épreuves de combat pendant que Brian
Constantini terminait deuxième en kata. À moins d'un ajout au
programme, roger st-Arneault et ses élèves effectueront leur
prochaine sortie le 27 janvier à fort Erie, dans le coin de
niagara Falls.
On apperçoit ci-haut les huit karatékas qui
représentaient l'école de Roger St-Arneault de Rouyn-Noranda à
l'occasion du tournoi de Delhi, en Ontario.

Saint-Arnaud participaient le week-end dernier à une épreuve à
Delhi en Ontario. Roger Saint-Arnaud a mérité une
première place en combat par équipe et en kata, ainsi qu'une
troisième position en combat.
Suzanne Paquin a été sélectionnée pour se battre face à
l'équipe nationale, Martiné Collin a remporté une première
place en combat et Bryan Constantine une troisième place en
kata.

Camps d’été Destor 2000

On the weekend of July 21,22 and 23rd, there was a summer camp held at Destor beach, close to Rouyn-Noranda. Sensei Roger Deschamps, Godan from the Hearst Wado-Kai, Sensei Léo Davis, Rokudan from the Okinawan Goju-Ryu, Sensei Dnut Nguyen, Sandan also from the Okinawan Goju-Ryu and myself Sensei Roger St-Arneault, Rokudan from the Rouyn-Noranda Wado-Kai were running this summer camp. It was a good success and we really appreciate all the people who took part to make it such a success.

HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL TEAMS

THE 1996 NATIONAL TEAM
The First National Team was selected at the direction of Sensei Masaru Shintani in 1996. This team consisted of six members Sensei Bruce Perkins, Simcoe Ontario, Sensei Danny McKee, Calgary, Alberta, Sensei Darren Humphries, Carlyle, Saskatchewan, Sensei Duncan Wallace, Carrboro, North Carolina, USA, Sensei Roger St. Arneault, Lake Dufault, Quebec, Sensei Tom Sheehan, Waterford, Ontario and Sensei Ron Mattie Welland, Ontario. The coach for this team was Sensei Peter Ciolfi, and the manager was Sensei Lawrence Blakemore.
THE 1997-1998 NATIONAL TEAM
The Second National Team was for the years 1997-1998 and was a one-year team selected at a Black Belt competition held in Fort Erie in July 1997. This team was made up of seven persons, Sensei Kyla Gould - Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sensei Julie Gagnon -Timmins, Ontario, Sense Michel Gosselin - Hearst, Ontario, Sensei Cal Pittet - Calgary Alberta, Sensei Darren Humphries - Regina, Saskatchewan, Sensei Bill Lebrun - Timmins, Ontario, Sensei Jim Lebrun - Schumacher, Ontario, Sensei Roger St. Arneault - Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. The Coach was Sensei Ron Mattie - Welland, Ontario, and the Manager was Sensei Peter Ruch - Fort Erie, Ontario. The team traveled to Redvers, Saskatchewan to compete in the Saskatchewan Provincial Tournament, the team also traveled to Stony Plain, Alberta to participate in the Western Canadian Championships. On each occasion the team workout with all the other competitors and enjoyed the hospitality.
THE 1998-2000 NATIONAL TEAM
The Third National Team was a two-year team 1998-2000. The Team was decided at the Black Belt Tournament July 4th, 1998 at Fort Erie. Again this persons competing for a position on the team had to have placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th in any sanctioned tournament. As a result, there were many participants from across Canada competing in this event.
The new team members were Sensei Marc Delage - Quebec, Sensei Michel Gosselin - Hearst, Ontario, Sensei Simon Northwood - Hamilton, Ontario, Sensei Jack Gingras - Welland, Ontario, Sensei Roger St. Arneault - Rouyn-Noranda Quebec, Sensei Cindy Rosevear- Hearst, Ontario, and Sensei Corry Ruch - Waterford, Ontario. The Coach was Sensei Ron Mattie - Welland, Ontario, the trainer for the team is Sensei Dave Brunarski - Simcoe, Ontario and the Manager was Sensei Peter Ruch - Fort Erie, Ontario.
The Team attended the following competitions; Northern Ontario Championships in Hearst, Ontario, The Western Canadian Championships, in Stony Plain Alberta, the National Tournament in St. Catharines, Ontario, the Manitoba Provincial Championships in Virden, Manitoba, and again the Western Canadian Championship in Stony Plain Alberta. Again the team was excited to be visiting the various areas and enjoyed the hospitality afforded them.
THE 2000-2002 NATIONAL TEAM
The 2000-2002 National Team was decided at a competition held in Fort Erie on May 26th, 2000 at the Fort Erie YMCA. This time there were qualifying tournaments to select seven (7) team members from four (4) divisions within Canada. There was the Western Division-British Columbia & Alberta. The Central Division- Saskatchewan & Manitoba, the Northern Ontario & Quebec Division, and the Southern Ontario Division.
The Judges for this tournament were Sensei Danny McCoy - Stony Plain, Alberta, Sensei Bob Graham - Buffalo, N. Y., Sensei Charlotte Martin - Port Dover, Ontario, Sensei Brian Chmay - St. Catharines, Ontario, Sensei Blaine Beamer - Vancouver, British Columbia, and Sensei Bruce Dunning - Virden, Manitoba. The Scorekeepers were Rod, Silvi and Eric Sumbler -Welland, Ontario.The event started at 7:00 pm with the opening anthem sung by a Fort Erie Karateka, Kristina Parkes.
The competition consisted of the competitors required to do a Pinan Kata and then an open Black Belt kata, judged on Technical and Spirit. The kumite was a round robin type with every competitor having ample opportunity to compete. It was an outstanding competition enjoyed by both competitors and spectators.
The 2000-2002 team is made up of Sensei Scott Hill - Tillsonbrug, Ontario, Sensei Mark Forsyth - Brandon, Manitoba, Sensei Walter Fast - St. Davids, Ontario, Sensei Michel Gosselin - Hearst, Ontario, Sensei Rathe Mokelky - Carlyle, Saskatchewan, Sensei Danielle Tardif - Hearst, Ontario, and Sensei Rachel Deschamps - Hearst, Ontario. The Team is looking forward to many competitions and training sessions in the future.

Roger St-Arneault conserve "sa" Coupe des Maîtres
(DC.) Pour une troisième année d'affilée, Roger St-Arneault a remporté la Coupe des Maîtres de karaté au championnat nord-américain de l'Association Wado-Kai, tenu le week-end dernier à Sainte-Catharines.
L'athlète du secteur Lac-Dufault en est à sa quatrième conquête de ce trophée, considéré comme la Coupe Stanley du Wado-Kai. Il l'avait aussi enlevé en 1994.
"L'épreuve de la Coupe des Maîtres consiste à présenter cinq techniques, à les expliquer et à démontrer aux juges qu'elles fonctionnent", d'indiquer St-Arneault, détenteur d'une ceinture noire 6e dan.
En plus de conserver la Coupe des Maîtres, le karatéka de 38 ans a triomphé en kata ouvert et pris le second rang en kata imposé.
Trois de ses élèves ont mérité des médailles, soit sa conjointe Suzanne Paquin, Réal Picard et Véronique Desgagnés. Paquin a arraché l'or chez les ceintures noires 2e et 3e dan, tout comme Desgagnés chez les ceintures brunes. Picard a quant à lui raflé le bronze chez les ceintures brunes.
De son côté, Karine Hamel a atteint la grande finale des ceintures oranges, mais elle a perdu sa médaille après avoir été disqualifiée par les officiels, qui ont jugé qu'elle avait frôlé le nez de l'adversaire avec son poing.
Pour la quatrième fois de sa carrière, dont une troisième de suite, Roger St-Arneault a remporté la Coupe des Maîtres de karaté, qui se veut la Coupe Stanley de l'Association Wado-Kai. St-Arneault (troisième à l'avant) pose ci-haut en compagnie de ses élèves et du précieux trophée.

Karaté: St-Arneault perd son gourou
Roger St-Arneault, ce karatéka bien connu de Rouyn-Noranda, a perdu son entraîneur Masaru Shintani, qui est décédé des suites d'un deuxième accident cérébro-vasculaire en quelques mois, dimanche dernier à Kapuskasing.
Agé de plus de 70 ans, Shintani demeurait à Hamilton et était le grand maître de la Wado-Kai Karate Federation. Il se trouvait à Kapuskasing pour donner des cours. <<Notre école devait participer à cette clinique, d'indiquer St-Arneault. Perdre son instructeur, ça donne un coup. Je lui parlais régulièrement. Avec son départ ça va être le free fort all dans le Wado-Kai>>, croit-il.

En plus de se classer 2e en kata, le Rouynorandien Roger St-Arneault a remporté plusieurs combats pour aider l'équipe canadienne Wado-Kai à prendre le ler rang au Western Canadian Championship de karaté, il y a une dizaine de jours à Edmonton. St-Arneault effectuera sa prochaine sortie à Saint Catharines les 26 et 27 mai lors du championnat nord-américain.

Lors d'un récent tournoi à Val d'Or, les élèves de l'école de karaté Wado-Kai de Rouyn-Noranda, dirigés par Roger St-Arneault, ont encore connu du succès. Le jeune Jimmy Jacob, 6 ans a terminé deuxième en kata, Maude Jacob, 6 ans, a remporté deux médailles d'argent et Jonathan Lacombe, 19 ans, a remporté une médaille d'or et une d'argent.

Cinq trophées pour St-Arneault et cie
(DC.) - Roger St-Arneault et deux de ses élèves ont mis la main sur cinq autres trophées, le week-end dernier, lors d'un tournoi national de karaté qui se déroulait à Welland, dans le sud de l'Ontario.
Inscrit chez les ceintures noires 4e dan et plus, l'athlète de Rouyn-Noranda a mérité la victoire en kata imposé et en kata ouvert, en plus de se classer 3e en combat.
St-Arneault a remporté quatre victoires en cinq affrontements, qui se sont tous réglés en prolongation. "Le calibre était très fort, affirme-t-il. J'ai un peu mal à la mâchoire car ça se tapait fort sur la gueule! Les arbitres étaient plus tolérants qu'à l'habitude."
Chez les ceintures brunes, Johnathan Lacombe a pris le 2e rang en combat. En grande finale, il s'est incliné en prolongation. Du côté féminin, Suzanne Paquin a été couronnée championne des épreuves de combat chez les ceintures noires.
Cette fin de semaine, à Hearst, Roger St-Arneault et 18 de ses protégés participent au championnat national de l'Association Wado-Kai. Ce tournoi sert de pré-sélection pour l'équipe canadienne.

Ron Matte, l'entraîneur de Roger St-Arneault avec l'équipe canadienne Wado-Kai, sera de passage en ville à la fin du mois d'avril pour donner des cliniques de karaté. "J'ai décidé de le faire revenir car mes élèves avaient adoré son enseignement l'an passé", de dire St-Arneault, en précisant que ces cliniques seront ouvertes à toutes les écoles d'arts martiaux.

Quatre autres trophées pour

(D. Chamberland) - Roger St-Arneault et sa conjointe Suzanne Paquin ont ajouté quatre trophées à leur collection déjà bien garnie, le week-end dernier à Simcoe, en Ontario, lors d'un tournoi national de karaté.
Inscrit dans la catégorie ceintures noires 4e dan et plus, St-Arneault a triomphé en kata (chorégraphie) et terminé bon deuxième en combat.
Le karatéka du secteur Lac-Dufault est bien heureux d'avoir rebondi après sa contre-performance d'il y a quelques semaines à Timmins. "Ça m'a donné un bon coup de pied dans le derrière!", avoue-t-il sans détour.
Dans les épreuves de combat, St-Arneault a d'abord signé deux gains faciles de 3-0, avant de plier l'échine 3-2 en grande finale face à un certain Brian Chmay, de Saint Catharines.
Je croyais avoir mériter la victoire, mais les juges en ont décidé autrement, mentionne-t-il. Quoi qu’il en soit, ce Chmay est un bon batailleur. "
De son côté, Suzanne Paquin est sortie victorieuse en combat chez les ceintures noires. Elle a aussi mérité la 2c place en kata chez les 1er et 2e dan, hommes et femmes confondus.
Ce week-end, Roger St-Arneault participe au tournoi de Virden, au Manitoba, en compagnie de l'équipe canadienne Wado Kai. "Il parait que ce tournoi est le troisième plus gros au pays", souligne-t-il.
Roger St-Arneault et Suzanne Paquin, du secteur Lac-Dufault, collectionnent les succès dans le monde du karaté.

Le tournoi régional d'arts martiaux tenu à Évain il y a dix jours a attiré quelque 175 participants. Les élèves de Roger St-Arneault ont notamment raflé neuf médailles, dont deux chacun pour le petit Jimmy Jacob (6 ans), Jonathan Lacombe et Suzanne Paquin.

St-Arneault et ses élèves remportent neuf trophées à Timmins
(D. Chamberland) - Représentée par une quinzaine de concurrents, l'école de Roger St-Arneault a mérité neuf trophées lors d'un tournoi de karaté, le week-end dernier à Timmins.
Samir Elbaccouch, un Tunisien récemment arrivé à Rouyn-Noranda, a été couronné champion en combat chez les ceintures noires ter et 2 dan. "C'est une belle machine, il a un bel avenir devant lui", mentionne St-Arneault.
Dans la catégorie ceintures brunes, Jonathan Lacombe a imité Elbaccouch en triomphant en combat, en plus de se classer 2e en kata (chorégraphie).
Chez les plus jeunes, les jumeaux Cédric et Raphaël Mariage ont retenu l'attention dans la classe 8-9 ans. Pendant que Raphaël remportait la victoire en combat, Cédric terminait 2c en combat et en kata. Chez les 6-7 ans, Jimmy Jacob est arrivé ter en combat et 2e en kata.
Des ennuis pour Roger
Contrairement à ses habitudes, Roger St-Arneault n'a pas fait très bonne figure à Timmins. De son propre aveu, il en a passablement arraché.
Inscrit chez les 5e dan et plus, St-Arneault a raté son kata et s'est contenté du 3e rang en combat. "J'ai offert une très mauvaise performance. avoue-t-il franchement.
"J'ai manqué de concentration en kata et lors de mon premier combat, les juges ont décidé que je gagnais même si mon adversaire (Billy Lebrun) avait eu le meilleur. Je ne méritais pas cette 3e place", de dire l'athlète du secteur Lac-Dufault.
St-Arneault se promet de rebondir à son prochain tournoi, dans quelques semaines à Simcoe. "Ce qui s'est passé à Timmins m'a donné un bon coup de pied au derrière!", affirme-t-il.

Roger St-Arneault et sa conjointe Suzanne Paquin, du secteur Lac Dufault, ont remporté trois trophées chacun lors d'un tournoi de karaté, il y a dix jours à Fort Erie. Chez les 1er et 2e dan, Paquin l'a emporté en kata imposé et en combat tout en se classant 4e en kata ouvert.

UPDATE
Travel Plans have been finalized for the Shintani National Team to attend the Manitoba Provincial Championships in Virden, Manitoba. Team members will be flying from Hearst Ontario, Rouyn-Noranda Quebec, Waterford Ontario, Welland Ontario, and Hamilton, Ontario to Winnipeg Manitoba and then take a four hour van ride to Virden, Manitoba to participate in the Manitoba Provincial Karate Championships. The National Team is made up of Sensei Jack Gingras, Sensei Marc Delage, Sensei Corry Ruch, Sensei Simon Northwood, Sensei Michel Gosselin, Sensei Roger St. Arneault, and Sensei Cindy Rosevear. Sensei Ron Mattie is the Team Trainer and Sensei Peter Ruch is the Team Manager. Sensei Bruce Dunning is running the Manitoba Provincial Toumament and is trilled to have members of the Team coming.
At the present time, the team will be travelling to Wado Kai Tounaments within Canada. It is our intent that in the future, the Team will compete intemationally against other styles of Karate. The building of the team has been a slow process but in the end it will be a worthwhile endeavour.
We hope that all Wado Kai Clubs in Canada will support the initiative of the Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation, by doing so you show your support for Sensei Shintani who fully supports the efforts of the Team.
On Friday May 26, 2000, the Fort Erie Wado Kai Karate Club will be hosting the Third Shintani National Team Competition at the Fort Erie YMCA. There will be 28 competitors from across Canada, seven competitors each from British Columbia/Alberta Region, Saskatchewan/Manitoba Region, Northern Ontario/Quebec, and Southem Ontario, attending this event; the seven first place winners will form the new 2000-2002 Team. This toumament which is on Friday, will be followed the next day by the National Toumament at Brock University, in St. Catharines on Saturday May 27, 1999. We have made application with a local Television Company to come and cover the Toumaments.

And the winners are …
Chris Ward of the Westbank Karate Club was winner of the gold medal for senior black belt heavyweight fighting at the third annual Wado-Kai Canada national karate championships held in Victoria in November.
Taking silver was Roger St-Arneault of CASK Shiai Victoria and bronze, Kevin Floyd of CASK Karate Vancouver.
Ali Gilanchi of Richmond Yukodo Kai was winner of the gold in the black belt open weight division while Ward took home silver and St. Arneault, bronze.
St. Arneault took gold in the black belt masters'division (35 years and over). Paul Baker of Nanaimo took silver.
Gilanchi won gold in both the black belt under 65 Kg and between 65 and 70 Kg divisions. Mark Cheng of Richmond Shito-Ryu took silver in both and fan Steele of Victoria Shotokan, bronze in both.
Heavyweight champion in the black beit women's division was Michele Pierce of Vancouver Shito-Ryu Seiko Kai. Taking silver was Loretta Schwab of Duncan Renshikan and bronze, Suzanne Paquin of CASK Shiai Victoria.
Pierce also took gold in the black belt open while AnnMarie Huang of Richmond Shito-Ryu took silver and Paquin, bronze. Schwab took gold in the masters' (35 and over) division. Paquin took silver.
Huang was winner of the black belt between 53 and 60 Kg division. Pam Ross of Courtney Karate took silver and Marie-Eve Lafreniere of Vancouver Shito-Ryu took bronze.
In the black belt under 53 Kg division, Carie Mohoruk took gold; Lisa Irving, silver; and Andrea Segsworth, bronze. All are from University of Victoria Shotokan.
Steele took the gold in black belt (third degree or higher) kata. Taking silver was Richard Mosdell of CASK Karate Vancouver and bronze, Gilanchi. Baker placed first in the masters' division while St. Arneault took second and William Martyn of Victoria Shotokan, third.
Casey Milis of Camano Island, Wa., placed first in the black belt kata (first degree) white Cheng placed second and Ward, third. Huang took gold in the black belt (first degree) women's kata division, Lafreniere, silver; and Brenda Bombini of Courtney Karate, bronze.
Nigel Nikolaisen of Campbell River Shito-Ryu, National Karate Association and Karate BC athlete of the year, took gold in the youth male orange to black belt (16-17): Winning silver was Matt Tapley of Campbell River Shito-Ryu, and bronze, Bob Ryan of Gold River Renshikan.
